As facial sponsor of The Kenya Network of Women and girls with disabilities who are the recipients of Disability Rights Fund grant, we were honored to receive Theophilus Odaudu, DRF’s Program Officer for Africa, for conversations on the current project as well as broadly our work as a Network of women and girls with disabilities. We had great conversations, the meeting was held at the offices of - Kenya National Deaf Women Peace Network who are also members of the Kenya Network of Women and girls with disabilities.
Through the DRF grant, the network members and champions have had opportunity to have an in-depth exploration of disability legislation with a particular focus on the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025, the African Disability Protocol and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
We recognize that a lot is needed for law to be translated into practice. Among others, it is advisable that target communities understand what is in the law and, secondly, know how to claim the rights reflected in the law. Without some of these foundational principles, it can be difficult for rights holders to benefit from pieces of legislation.
The DRF grant therefore is playing a key role not just to strengthen understanding of the disability rights frameworks, but also to strengthen our members’ and champions’ capacity to monitor implementation and promote accountability in disability rights commitments. Already, our participants have been supported to develop action plans for implementing advocacy initiatives at community and county levels under this initiative.
We are thankful to DRF as we see this type of support as playing a key role to advance the leadership of women with disabilities in our communities. We hope to continue making the experiences of women with disabilities more visible in our communities and supporting them to take up leadership, and by so doing, work towards addressing the underrepresentation of women with disabilities in leadership and governance.

disability frameworks for champions from Meru, Kisumu, Kitui, Nairobi, and Busia counties.
